5 anti-aging skin care tips that really work

15 May 2015

That I enjoy getting older doesn’t mean I’m not into staying in shape. Au contraire, I would say. I had enough time to experiment which anti-aging products work for my skin and which do not. These are my 5 anti-aging facial favourites, vitamin A and C appear fundamental for me. Age with grace.

Kiehls Skin Calming Facial Cleanser

Cleaning is key for anti-aging. Day and Night. Without proper cleansing the rest of the anti-aging skin care routine is of no use. Hm, that sounds kind of harsh but you’ll get the point. After trying a dozen of cleanser products and/or systems Kiehl’s Centella Cleanser is the one for me. Alcohol free and calming, leaves my skin soft and hydrated. And without perfume. I apply a liberal amount to my damp skin, gently massage it  and clean it with a damp, warm cloth.
Mission accomplished.

Bye, bye fine wrinkles and dark spots.
Tretinoin 0,05 % cream, anti-aging trick

Originally designed to treat acne, dermatologists found that Retin-A cream is also effective as anti-aging product to combat wrinkles, dark spots and sagging. It is made from Vitamin A and is much stronger than retinol, which is the weaker form used in lot’s of skin care products. It is a prescriptive cream in Holland – some of my friends treat their dermatologists tretinoin prescription as a piece of gold. But… in Portugal (or other European countries) you might just buy it over the counter at the pharmacy. Tip: show a photo of the cream, works for me.

• start with only 2 times a week (I use it 3 to 4 times a week)
• only use at night
• wait 20 minutes after cleaning and your usual night cream
Your skin will start to peel a bit at first, it needs to adjust. Take a small amount – pea size, one for the face and one for the neck/chest. Never forget the latter!

No longer available in Holland, be nice to friends who are visiting New York.
Obagi Professional anti-aging C Serum

This is my morning skin saviour. The Obagi Professional C Serum is oily and formulated with L-ascorbic acid (aka Vitamin C) to help defend against the signs of skin aging. It retains moisture, enhances UV protection and brightens the skin. I use a drop or six before my day cream (and SPF!) and divide it over my face,  neck and chest (and finish with the back of my hands). It is rapidly absorbed, I like that. Downside is that since last year this product is no longer available at Obagi depositaries in Europe. Only in the US. So be very friendly to those who visit New York… Anti-aging wise.

A pharmacie's secret for long, long lashes.
Lumigan for longer lashes

Another (Portuguese) pharmacy secret. This product is a drug for glaucoma which has a side effect of increasing the length and fullness of eyelashes. I use a small eyeliner brush every morning and apply it on the upper lash line only. First I put one drop of Lumigan in the lid and dip the brush in some dark brown eyeshadow before I dip it into the liquid. Then I paint a small line on the lash line. The remainder I use for my eyebrows. Keep the line thin and wash the brush on a regular basis with a bit of shampoo. Don’t put it in your eyes, unless you have glaucoma.

Silk Sleeping Mask, the cheapest anti-aging trick

Simple but so effective! Do you wake up in the morning with a slight resemblance of a sharpei dog? No longer! A silk (important) sleeping masks keeps your skin smooth and helps prevent wrinkles. A better night of sleep and a cheap anti-aging remedy. I can’t sleep without this classic win win.
The mask on the picture is from the current collection at Zara Home for 6,95€.
