Spoil yourself. That’s what we thought when booking hotel Villa Italia in Cascais. Facing the sea, this 5* LHW hotel is all about sophisticated luxury. And more. They certainly did not economize on marble and brass around here. The gold and black mosaics floors throughout the ground floors are impressive and impeccable, I couldn’t stop looking down. Or taking #Ihavethisthingwithfloors Instagram pics. The surroundings and staff are true royal style and made us feel like the Royal Dutch Couple. Minus the Jan Taminiau dress, that is.
A little bit of Villa Italia royal history
This opulent Villa Italia was the former home of the Humberto II, the last king of Italy, who lived here in exile for 37 years. After WW-II he only reigned one month in May 1946 – his nickname therefore ‘King of May’ – before the Italian monarchy was abolished. The Italian Republic barred all male heirs to the Italian throne from ever returning to Italian soil. So Portuguese soil and Cascais Bay sea view it was.
The King quickly entered the Estoril luxury circuit, and was a constant presence in social gatherings and other events. Missing his home country, he named the place ‘Villa Italia’. After an impressive renovation the hotel opened in 2007.
Now we’re talking Spa’s
High praise for the Real Spa Marina, the main attraction and destination for many guests. I understand why. After descending the main stairs in the lobby, a slow walk through a fully marble hallway leads into an even more opulent roman bath-house style spa. Cleopatra eat your heart out.
Of only 1000 m2. Think heated treatment pool, Thalassotherapy, Vichy showers, chronotherm, body treatments and a state-of-the-art gym. The emphasis on health and well-being extends to the two restaurants, which offer customized diet and health programs. Finally a breakfast buffet with more superfoods to choose from than at home.
Cascais, only 30 minutes from Lisbon
We fully understand why Lisbon residents often spend their weekend in this charming seaside village along the Estoril coast. It’s only an easy 30 minutes drive from the city!
Since we were only visiting Cascais for 24 hours, we divided our time between this luxury place and playing golf at Oitavus Dunes links course. Therefore there wasn’t enough time to explore Cascais this time. Did that some twenty years ago, sweet memories. That leaves us with only one thing to do. Come back soon. Até a proxima!
ps. the poetic red line in Villa Italia is a quote from Fernando Pessoa on surprising places. This is my favourite, on a paper coaster:
Drink life down in one gulp, and with that gulp all the sensations that life imparts. – Fernando Pessoa
