Un peu de Paris in Amsterdam at Auberge Jean & Marie

Auberge Jean & Marie Amsterdam

Auberge means traditional inn and that’s exactly what the owners Jan Grijspeere and Marije Bremer would like to accomplish. Oui, Jean et Marie. A place where guests are welcome anytime for lunch, dinner or just a glass of excellent wine at the bar. Seven days a week. What’s even better, the owners actually run the business.
Located in the popular, trendy ‘De Pijp’ neighbourhood, Auberge Jean & Marie is a relaxed and classic hangout with good food and even better wines. French cuisine et vins.

Friends and business partners Jan and Marije proved their culinary worth in several successful restaurants in Amsterdam. Working together in places like Bistrot Neuf, Guts & Glory and Blauw aan de Wal for years, the moment to make their ambitions become reality has finally arrived.

We’re incredibly proud of the location of the Auberge. This is a dream come true. We love sharing our knowledge and passion for good and delicious food and wine.

They are both very enthousiastic about the food and wines hence the explaining of the menu in a mouthwatering way. Sharing the culinary memories they gained over the years. There is a small fixed menu with a choice of meat, fish, poultry and vegetarian. I tried the Salade d’haricots et girolles, radis et chèvre also known as bean salad with chanterelle and matured goat cheese. I like it when the portions are not too big and leave room for the next course.
In addition to the menu there are daily ‘Chef’s Specialties’, according to what Chef Joris van Dijk finds on the market.

Since being a moderate drinker, enjoying one glass of (red) wine at dinner is enough for me. Which often means a choice between two or three house wines. The Auberge Jean & Marie is also a winebar and therefore serves over 70 wines by the glass.
In the back of the restaurant – left – you’ll find a walk-in wine cellar with around 1000 beautiful bottles. Both chosen by the owners and guests themselves. If your favourite Bordeaux isn’t in the racks, tip them your wine secret.
We all followed Marije’s advice – shared with knowledge and enthusiasm – which grape to pair with which dish. All spot on.

The location, stylish interior – by Bodo Breg, open door policy, fixed team and hands-on owners contribute to the living room restaurant atmosphere. A place where friends come back over and over again to share life over good food and good wine. Santé!
