Beauty Bucketlist update: primer, concealer & foundation

9 November 2016
Foundation Primer Concealer

After fifty it’s not how much make-up you put on your face (for me, less is more) but to make sure you have a good base. Quality skin care with spf is of high importance since sun exposure is the major cause of skin damage and therefore skin aging. We can’t live without it (don’t forget to take your vit. D on grey autumn days) but also need protection from it.
Today we review a selection of the latest primer, concealer and foundation launches mixed with some golden oldies.
After a good cleanse comes a great serum followed by moisturizer (or not, depending on how dry your skin is), some dots of concealer on aging spots or dark circles, then it’s prime (r) time and finish this ritual with a (spf) foundation.

primer embryolisse mac babor lycogel

MAC, Embryolisse, Babor & Lycogel Primer

Good news, Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré is now also available in Holland. No need to roam Parisian or Portuguese pharmacies to stock up on this cult status wonder cream. Lait-Crème Concentré can be used as cleanser, hand cream and aftershave balm but is also as a perfect primer.
This plant based champion is the French love under make-up artists and models for years. Only thing missing is SPF, make sure to finish with spf foundation.
Available online at Embryolisse and at Douglas. 75 ml – 19,95 €

An goldie oldie is MAC Prep + Prime Face protect lotion SPF 50. An antioxidant-rich lotion that protects the skin from broad spectrum UVA/UVB rays. This non-oily formula absorbs quickly into the skin. Feels light and comfortable, breathable.
Available at MAC counters and MAC online.  30 ml – 30 €

Made in Holland is Lycogel breathable balm, a spf 15 base. Lycogel started in 2004 with a breathable camouflage concealer (see below) to help cosmetic surgery patients hide the signs of their procedure. Today they carry 4 different products, one of them is this light balm which protects the skin and stimulates healthy cell renewal. I use a small dot as base before the Lycogel breathable tint (see below).
Available at authorized salons, check Lycogel online. 60 ml – 59,80 €

My mature skins has some redness to it and – how shall I call it – couperose light. This new two-in-one Babor Couperose Dual Solution takes just care of that with a serum on one side and a primer on the other. A perfect travel companion. The serum calms the skin and reduces redness while the primer – with green pigments – gives my skin a more even tone. Don’t leave the house with only the primer on.
Available at Babor. 30 ml – 40 €

Concealer La Mer Lavera Lycogel

La Mer, lavera & Lycogel concealer

After primer comes concealer. What to conceal? Well. Dark inner eye areas, under eye circles, age spots and broken veins.
The Lycogel Breathable Concealer (with spf 30!) is suitable for every skin type, even the most sensitive. It heals and conceals while the skin is still able to breath. Dotting and smoothing is my modus operandus.
Available in 3 shades at authorized salons, check Lycogel online. 7,4 ml small tube – 40,40 €

The lavera Natural Concealer has a light feel and is a 100% natural product, paraben and synthetic ingredients free. Vegan. Not shiny or greasy, does not settle into lines and wrinkles and is rich in anti-aging ingredients. It has a light to moderate coverage. Again dot and smooth, you know where. Lavera manufactures nature skin care products for over 25 years and uses herbal ingredients, certified organic whenever possible. I am a Lavera fan since ages.
Available in 2 tones at authorized stores, more info lavera. 6,5 ml with applicator – 9,75 €

Last, but certainly not least, the new La Mer The Concealer. The look and feel alone! Luxury! You would assume that a concealer in a stick is not creamy, but au contraire, this one is. It covers all day in a weightless feel. The signature La Mer Miracle Broth – fermented nutrient-rich sea kelp – is key ingredient. Antioxidants, anti-aging.
Available in 4 shades, more info La Mer. 5 gr. stick – 60 €

Foundation La Mer Natura Bisse Lycogel

Natura Bissé, Lycogel and La Mer Foundation

Now that we are all primed up and concealed, it’s time for the finishing foundation touch. These are the three foundations I am using right now, depending on how much coverage the situation demands. Non while working in the vegetable garden.
The Cure sheer oil-free fluid by Natura Bissé has it all. Efficient packaging (travel favorite!): tube wíth pump, smooth coverage, spf20 and a matting effect. It keeps the skin hydrated, protected and evens the complexion. Light texture with medium, radiant coverage.
Available 1 shade that adjust to your skin tone. Natura Bisse. 50 ml – 133 €

Lycogel Breathable Tint spf 30 is perfect for a day outside. Another example of cosmetic and skincare technology combined. 12 active ingredients, LYCO-complet, deliver oxygen, moisture and nutrients to the skin including hyaluronic acid, anti-oxidants and peptides. Warning: be careful when pulling a white shirt over your head.
Available 4 shades. Lycogel. 30 ml – 65 €

What’s in a name? A lot.
Nothing to add to The Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation SPF20 of La Mer. Just released and this is where weightless texture meets luxurious, long wear. New color capsule technology helps color stay true. Healing hydration, Miracle Broth, SPF and antioxidants help protect a newly flawless complexion. Shake well.
Best tool to apply foundation is a dedicated brush. I am totally in love with La Mer’s The Foundation Brush. A precision brush that helps smooth fluid foundation easily over my skin.
Available 15 shades La Mer. 30 ml – 95 € | Brush 55 €

Foundation Jane Iredale purepressed compact

A different approach on foundation is the Jane Iredale Purepressed base mineral foundation. I discovered Jane Iredale – she founded her company in the 90’s – during my (many, ha!) spa visits on my recent road trip through Canada. This vegan foundation is free of synthetic chemicals, contains antioxidants, is water-resistant and has a sheer matte finish.
Oh, and SPF20 broad spectrum. Apply also with a special brush, The Handi in this case, and make circular movements. A foundation, powder and concealer all-in-one. Finish with a spritz of hydrating fixation. Fresh!
Available in more shades than you can imagine. New in Holland, Jane Iredale.

  • Purepressed base mineral foundation refill €49,50 | golden box included €63,00
  • The Handi €41
  • Lemongrass Love Hydration Spray €29,90

I know, this is the moment where my before and after shots should come in. Or my video tutorial. Sorry, that’s not me. I’ll stick to sharing my skin care favourites in a blog post. I have my flaws.

    Hallo Karin,
