Today is International Women’s Day and this years theme is #BeBoldForChange. Change in the meaning of creating a better working world together, a more gender inclusive world. Hear, hear to that.
I would also like to add the other topical theme, the recently founded crowdfunding platform #SheDecides by our Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade & Development Lilianne Ploumen.
This global initiative aims to support the fundamental right to have full access to sexual health and family planning for everyone.
Call to action no. 1, She Decides
We all know what recently happened, the current U.S. President (can’t even type his name) banned financial support to foreign organisations who provide access to safe abortion or information about abortion, the so-called Global Gag Rule. The loss of U.S. support means the loss of 600 million to global women health groups, like Women on Waves.
What started as an initiative by Mrs. Ploumen and her staff proofs that when you do the right thing, the rest will follow. In stead of negotiating first with others countries they just started the She Decides crowdfunding platform.
“I said, let’s take the initiative and if others follow, yes! If others don’t, we’ll still have done the right thing”.
__ Lilianne Ploumen, Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade & Development
After the international She Decides conference in Brussels last week, over 45 countries expressed their support and made donations. The total amount raised is over 200 million today. And still counting.
The support not only comes from governments, we can all contribute. Every donation counts. Ok, the 20 million dollar donation from Bill & Melinda Gates speeds things up, but ours helps as well and is needed very much. I just did mine, if you want you can do your donation in a few simple steps.
Women and girls have a fundamental right to decide freely and for themselves whether, when and how many children they have.
Call to action no.2, #BeBoldForChange
The 2017 theme is a shout out to all to be proud of who you are, speak up and connect on a more profound level. We have to realise that we can be a leader within our own spheres of influence, by taking bold pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity. That through purposeful collaboration, we can help women advance and unleash the limitless potential offered to economies the world over.
The question asked is How will you #BeBoldForChange? Which area will you take bold action in? Make a choice on the International Women’s Day platform and be bold.
I opted for the celebration of women’s achievement. I get inspired by and am very proud of the strong women who surround me. How they deal with life, work, family, illness and death and helping each other simultaneously. That’s why my favourite category on Chapter Fifty is Portraits.
Thank you for sharing and inspiring us, ladies!
