[by Marjolein] Multi-talented Dutch couturier Mart Visser presents his haute couture collection number 50 in Amsterdam. How appropriate, so this is Mart’s own Chapter Fifty! Inside knowledge: a great chapter to celebrate.
The jubilee exhibition Beyond Context is “the ultimate synergy between haute couture, prêt-à-porter and artwork”, says the invite.
The Artesia building where this fashion and art pop-up museum takes place, will turn into luxurious apartments. But first, Mart Visser takes the creative lead for an experience that is about to start. I enter the grand marbled entrance with high ceilings. On the left I see hats floating. On the right lots of lace in a collection of wedding gowns. Give me more.
Mart Visser Haute Couture
This year it is 25 years ago that Mart Visser enters the Dutch couture scene with his own label. He uses all his creativity – back in 1992 – to make the clothes luxurious and international.
“I barely had the funds to put the show together”
__ Mart about his very first collection
Well, Mart succeeded in a big way. He dresses women of all sizes. Real women, not just model sized ones. Mart Visser wants us to look at our best. And strong. And feminine. Grande dames such as actress Liz Snoyink and Ans Markus make statements in his haute couture. Muse & model Daphne Deckers looks great in his design at the investiture of our King Willem Alexander in 2013.
Beyond Context shows a lot of these couture gowns and bridal show stoppers. Always with a touch of sexy. Yes! The outfits are on display in color groups. My favorite corner is the gold one. I consider stealing this top with straw like things sticking out. Must stop myself.
Mart Visser Artwork
Faces. Driftwood. Pieces of rope. Rusted chains. Discarded plastic. Paint. Old phone books. Anything can and will be used by Mart to create his art. It was only last year, that he showed his art collection for the very first time.
The running theme for his work is faces. Are they male? Are they female? The man himself can and will not answer to that. One must make out of it what one thinks they are. Well, it is impressive.
On the first floor of The Artesia I walk into this giant raw space (unfinished walls, floors, everything) and I am surrounded by faces on pedestals. I’m gob smacked. In 2006 Visser started painting faces in his spare time. Nowadays, his work has evolved into multi-material works and more Mart-classic oil paintings. His art is for sale at international art shows. Renowned art shows.
I’m impressed with what I see and feel, that’s for sure. Before leaving, Mart & I make selfies. Well, he makes them. He even is a master at that. Beyond Context masterful.
