Three is a lovely crowd when it all adds up. We love to organise exclusive events where our main goal is to bring people, place and product in sync. It was just that during our most recent Chapter Fifty gathering. Sixteen inspiring women joined our ladies lunch at the Brasserie of 5* hotel l’Europe in Amsterdam. After healthy food and guilty dessert pleasures we’re heading upstairs to the penthouse suite for a private sale of luxury travel wear brand Bananatime.
Bananatime, say what?
Bananatime is a luxury label, based in Amsterdam, for the adventurous, curious and bold. Breaking up the monotony with a versatile, colorful and unisex collection. In the highest quality Mulberry silk or cashmere. Say no more, they’ve got our attention.
Julia and Naoyo both live in Amsterdam and founded Bananatime in 2017 after working in fashion for almost twenty years. Travel was an important factor in their work life. When they could not find high quality items to wear for both business and pleasure, without borrowing from their boyfriend’s closets, they created their own.
Ah, the name! In 1959, Donald Francis Roy wrote a paper titled ‘Banana Time’ that describes how industrial workers made work and their work places a better place. By having some Banana Time: playing games and taking short breaks with their colleagues throughout the day. That state of mind repeats throughout our collection.

Veggie Lunch love
After a welcome glass of bubbly in the lobby, we head to l’Europe’s Brasserie where a table is set and ready for our loud group of fifty-somethings. Always great to have one long table and we fit right in.
The menu is exactly up our ally, most of us being vegetarian – when we organise events, it’s a given fact that the food is vegetarian – with a hint of naughty for dessert. The bbq avocado with colourful kumquats, soft goats cheese and ajo blanco for starters is delish.
It turns out we are guinea pigs for a new main course, stewed cabbage in red wine sauce with truffle. We’re all so enthusiastic, it will make it into the new spring menu. A theme inspired dessert is an amazing concoction of wafer-thin ‘dried’ chocolate on top of banana ice cream, paired with yuzu and a hint of nutmeg. We want more!
Private Sale Bananatime
When we enter the penthouse suite it’s about stress of choice where to look first. The racks filled with colorful silk and cashmere clothes or should we take in the view of the Amstel River from the many windows?
First the latter before Julia shares the intriguing story behind Bananatime with us. This brand really comes from the heart and focusses on buy less but buy better quality that lasts a lifetime.
Then we start scanning the racks, touching and fitting. Soon the bathrooms – white Carrara marble, bedroom, hallway and kitchen are turned into fitting rooms. So many styles and patterns, there is something for everyone. Not into patterns? There is always a supersoft cashmere hoodie.
Goodiebag: give & take
What’s an event without a carefully curated goodiebag, right? We’re spoiled by Combray Skincare, Skin for Skin supplements, Talisman Travel Design, Sensai Mascara, Afternoon Tea at l’Europe and a cute silk Bananatime scarf. Tnxxx so much to all!
But this time we added something special. Together with Soap Foundation we asked our attendee’s to also bring something: beauty items that will be donated to women in vulnerable situations, who live in shelters and refugee camps. From shampoo to hair brushes and from bodylotion to cottonpads. Soap Foundation asks women to empty their bathroom cabinets and donate unused products because beauty should not be a luxury nor should it be wasted and available to all. Hear, hear.
